Career Outlook

Employment of personal and home care workers is projected to grow by 56 percent nationally between 2006 and 2016, which is much faster than for other occupations. In addition, there are currently over 45 million family caregivers in the United States, all in desperate need of trained relief caregivers.

Forbes Magazine reported in late October 2007 that Personal and Home Care Aides were included as number 10 in the future top 15 jobs. Forbes Magazine further reported that "Personal and home care aides will also gain an impressive number of positions by 2014; 287,000. In addition, the fastest growing occupations are home care and home health care aides. The expected growth is due, in large part, to the changing demographics: our population is aging. Elderly citizens have mounting health problems and frequently need some assistance with daily activities. The elderly, chronically ill and others, such as the mentally disabled, increasingly rely on home care services."

State of Oregon Employment Trends report that by 2014 there will be a +33% in job openings for Personal Caregivers in Oregon and a +56% increase nationally.
